TFH is 4: Healthcare Practitioners TFH may be a new tool in your professional practice, or it may become the central focus or hub of your approach to helping people achieve their health goals. Since the 70’s when TFH was first established in California, TFH has been approved as continuing education for Nurses and Massage Therapists. It is approved by NCTMB (insert CEU statements for nursing and massage). TFH is often approved as continuing education for health care practitioners of all kinds when applied for individually. It is employed by chiropractors, medical doctors, massage therapists, physical therapists, counselors, psychologists, and energy workers of all kinds.
TFH is 4: Specialized Kinesiologists and Energy Kinesiologists Touch for Health ®is the most widely used system of Energy Kinesiology in the world. Touch for Health ®has been safely used since 1973 in over 100 countries of the world and the Touch for Health ®book has been translated into at least a dozen languages. It is recognized and respected as one of the key sources and inspirations and a fundamental training in the emerging fields of Specialized Kinesiology/ Energy Kinesiology, Energy Psychology, Energy Medicine, and is often a foundational training for specific specialty trainings in these fields. As well as a home, self-care and basic clinical healing modality in it's own right. All of your training hours in the TFH Synthesis, TFH Metaphors, TFH Proficiency Review & Certification, and TFH Training/ Instructor Certification (about 160- 320 hrs total) Count towards most Energy Kinesiology Practitioner certifications in the USA, and internationally. While there is no government or insurance recognition or regulation of Energy Kinesiology Practitiners in the USA, and practitioners may or may not need a “license to touch” depending on state laws (See massage website for map of “freedom of practice” and “massage licensing” requirements in the USA), these certifications represent the consensus of professional standards in the emerging field of Energy Kinesiology, and give the consumer some basis for informed choice. Thie, a chiropractor from Pasadena, California, for patient education and self-care, Touch for Health ® Kinesiology has touched the lives of millions of people world-wide, and has been influential in the development of, and remains part of today’s many cutting edge energy based health care methods, as well as being integrated into the practice of many traditional healthcare practices. Touch for Health draws on some of the core principles and techniques of Applied Kinesiology (AK), founded by Dr. George Goodheart, together with concepts and methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and a philosophy of self-care and personal development (as opposed to diagnosis and treatment), taking a grassroots “each-one-teach-one” approach to sharing these simple, safe, but profound methods. Dr. George Goodheart, a chiropractor from Detroit Michigan, began using muscle testing as a method of evaluating which muscles were involved in postural imbalances in the early 1960’s. His muscle-testing procedures were based largely on the Muscle Testing/ Kinesiology texts of physical therapists Kendall & Kendall, from the 1940’s. These muscle tests were designed to evaluate the strength and function of specific muscles or identify injury and even paralysis (due to polio or other diseases). Goodheart soon found that muscles that sometimes performed as if weak, did not necessarily have the expected atrophy- shrinkage due to disuse. (The rule with muscles is definitely “use it or lose it”). Upon palpation- manual examination of the muscle size, shape, texture, etc.- Goodheart not only found that apparently weak muscles had a form that suggested they were being used, but the response of the muscle actually changed after this manual stimulation. Goodheart soon incorporated the use of touch reflex points developed by osteopaths Terence Bennett (Neurovascular reflexes) and Frank Chapman (Neurolyphatic reflexes)- and eventually many other techniques, as part of his system of not only evaluating muscle function and response, but changing and improvingmuscle response, and balancing the physical posture. He called his system Applied Kinesiology and began sharing this knowledge with other chiropractors and professionals, first through his writings and then through workshops and practical trainings. Both Chapman and Bennett related their reflex points to specific organs and physiological systems. As Goodheart began to relate the specific points to particular muscles, muscle testing provided additional clues (together with traditional diagnostic information) to the function of internal organ systems, and an expectation that improvement in muscle function would contribute to improved organ and physiological function as well. Goodheart also began to employ another set of reflex points that had some kind of organ relationship- the acupuncture points, and energy pathways from Traditional Chinese Medicine (The ‘Meridians’ which are most all named for associated organs- Heart, Spleen, Stomach, etc. Eventually incorporating empirical data from clinical practice, nutritional and emotional factors were also integrated in the evaluation and treatment of imbalances in the posture, physiology, organs, nutrition, emotions, etc. One of the very simple, yet profound concepts that Goodheart developed early on was his “Opposing Muscle Theory” (revolutionary to this day). He found that most of the time, the tense or spasming muscle is not the source of the problem, but rather, opposing or synergistic muscles that are somehow switched off and behaving as if weak create an imbalance that results in excess tension in normally functioning muscles. Reading about the Opposing Muscle Theory, John Thie was fascinated with Goodheart’s teachings, and became involved in organizing gatherings and workshops through the Goodheart Study Group Leaders, and eventually served as the first Chairman when Goodheart founded his International College of Applied Kinesiology. John found that the AK techniques were not only powerful in the clinical setting, but many of his patients were safely applying some of the principles of “rubbing their own sore points and switching on their muscles”. When John began to organize basic workshops for lay people and clinical assistants/ para-professionals, there was a concern that some lay people might start to represent themselves as doctors, and attempt to use muscle testing by itself to attempt diagnosis and treatment of named diseases (which would be both unreliable and illegal!) Looking for an alternative model to medical diagnosis and treatment that would be appropriate for home self-care, John based the Touch for Health ® system on the holistic energy balancing model of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Totally in keeping with the original ideals of chiropractic to teach people to maintain their health and prevent disease by keeping their posture in balance, the TCM model also fit well with western ideas of personal development and self-care that became popular in the early 1970’s. Originally called Health from Within, the design of the TFHK Workshops is based more on the model of Effective Communication/Parenting/Leadership Skills workshops shared by Tom Gordon (a protégé of Carl Rogers), integrating the philosophy of person-centered therapy exemplified by Rogers, Virginia Satir and others. Dr. Thie and his wife Carrie Thie had both studied with Tom Gordon and Virginia Satir before developing the TFH teaching program, and were profoundly influenced by this approach and philosophy. Reinforcing the concept of internal harmony from TCM, and the postural balancing from chirpractic and AK, the person-centered approach starts from the assumption that the human being will naturally come into a state of balance, harmony and health through self-awareness and congruity between the internal thoughts and emotions, the external posture/attitude and expression, and the contextual reality of the present moment. Though designed to be simple and accessible enough for anyone to put to use in their lives right away, both the concepts and techniques of TFH can be profoundly life affirming and life changing as self-care, and as a tool or central modality in the clinical setting, and has contributed fundamental principles to both the philosophy and techniques in the emerging field of Specialized Kinesiology or Energy Kinesiology (professional practice of muscle/energy balancing methods in a holistic, Wellness/personal-development model, rather than in the disease treatment model) Description of the procedure- what to expect from a Balancing Session: Touch for Health ® Kinesiology is generally experienced fully clothed - though comfortable clothing that allows free movement is ideal, and it is easy to do standing, sitting or lying down on a ‘massage table’ or any firm, comfortable surface. (TFH may be incorporated into massage, acupuncture or other types of therapy sessions in which the client may not be fully clothed) Muscle testing/monitoring is a cooperative venture and requires active participation. It is usually done in pairs, with one person stabilizing and applying pressure in order to test their partner’s muscle responses in particular positions/ranges of motion. A relative sense of ease or difficulty in holding the muscle in specific position (optimum range for a particular muscle contraction), reflects balance or imbalances in the body, whether physical/structural (muscles, spine, bones etc.) or more mental/emotional or energetic, as reflected in the physical muscle response. A variety of dialogue, visualization, and touch reflex methods are used to improve the response of particular muscles and restore balance and flexibility/flow in the muscles/posture, circulation, and energy system. Positive goals or intentions are usually set for each session, and emotional stress release methods can be employed at any stage, before during and after the ‘balancing’. Touch reflexes include light stretching of skin over the vertebrae (Spinal Reflex or Bilateral Reflex), Firm rubbing of specific tender points mostly on the front and back of the torso (Neurolymphatic points), light holding of points on the head (Neurovascular Holding Points) or at specific acupuncture points (Acupressure Holding Points), physical tracing of the acupuncture energy pathways (Meridians), and manual stimulation to the muscle fibers (Golgi Tendon and Spindle Cell techniques). Improvement in the comfort, sense of strength and flexibility of a series of specific muscles is also reflected in improved posture, enhanced mental clarity, improved motivation, and better overall performance. These improvements also believed to reflect improved flow and balance of life energy (or Chi from TCM), enhancing the body’s natural healing functions and contributing to vitality and the ability to maintain good health. What is a TFH “Practitioner”? Within the TFH program and philosophy, a TFH practitioner is anyone who studies and practices the principles and techniques of TFH. This may be a lay person who has simply studied the TFH book and learned to balance muscles and energy, or who has taken all or part of the 60 hour TFH Synthesis- the Basic Training of TFH and Energy Kinesiology. Lay practitioners may not be “professional” in the sense of making TFH part of a business practice, charging for their services, and perhaps earning their living, but non-professional TFH practitioners may still be expert and highly effective in using the principles and techniques of TFH to help others and themselves. A TFH practitioner may also be a practitioner of almost any other Health-care modality who uses TFH as an integral or complementary part of their practice. For the first 20 or so years of TFH, we ONLY trained TFH Instructors, not practitioners per se. With the growth of TFH and Energy Kinesiology in general have grown to the place where is a demand for , and increasing availability of training for Professional practitioners of Kinesiology Per Se. Currently, there is only one program which offers a certification as a Professional TFHK practitioner. In the united states, you should interview each Practitioner (according to the California Health Freedom Law) as to their general philosophy, training and type of practice. Under TFHKA- We do not train TFH practitioners per se. We train people to be proficient in the TFH techniques for home self-care and/or as an additional element of their healthcare practice, and to TEACH OTHERS to be able to use these techniques. TFHKA/IKC does not have a TFH practitioner certification program, but rather and educational program in which we emphasize the communication and presentation skills of sharing this work, and teaching others to use it. We only CERTIFY TFH Instructors, we do not certify professional practitioners. Nonetheless many people have become professional practitioners and there is an emerging profession of Specialized Kinesiology or Energy Kinesiology, and both national and international organizations are developing consensus standards for designations like the Energy Kinesiology Associations (EnKA) “Professional Energy Kinesiology Practitioner” (PEnKP levels I-III) Or the IKC Certification of “Professional Kinesiologist”. These are general standards of training that are recognized, and not specific training programs per se. In these and most all such designations, all of the hours of TFH (potentially about 165 hours of classroom training, plus credits for independent study and repetition of classes) count towards professional certification, but usually additional training is also required in first aid, additional kinesiology courses (usually elective among a variety of available trainings), and supplementary study of anatomy, physiology, communication, practice/business management and so forth. How do I get started? WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY? Movement The Study of Movement Kinesiology (pronounced kin-easy-ology) refers to the study of Body mechanics- muscles and movement in the human body and is widely used in this context by physical educators, coaches and physiotherapists. , study of muscles and movement of the human body, neurology and phsycial coordination/function. art and science of muscle testing or muscle monitoring. Body Biofeedback What is Muscle Testing, Checking or Monitoring? What is Applied Kinesiology? What is Chiropractic?/ Osteopathy Natural state of the body is BALANCE and homeostatis we can assist the body by using, natural, gentle, non-invasive techniques, IF YOUR SPINE IS IN LINE, YOU’LL FEEL FINE How is TFH and AK different, TFH and PKP different? In what way is TFH simple, Easy and FUN! How do we know TFH is safe??? IS TFH kinesiology “scientific”- or “evidence based”? Science and Theory - There is a great deal of research going on in the energy health world today. Many people who have seen the phenomenal results while working with the subtle energies continue their research into advanced techniques. There is also a great deal of research being performed by biomedical groups and academia into the energy healing world of healthcare. What do we mean by “non-invasive”? What is the Holistic/Wellness Model and how is that different than the diagnosis and treatment model? Touch for Health ® Kinesiology is not a Panacea, or a treatment for any particular disease, what good is it? What is a bio-energetic model? What is the Educational Model? What is the Self-Responsibility Model? What is the Personal Development or Person-centered model? What is Effective Communication? Reflective/Active Listening? What’s Energy Kinesiology or Specialized Kinesiology (Energy/Specialized) Kinesiology is a holistic system of natural health care which uses muscle testing to communicate directly with the body. It can assess a person's response to any stimulus. It draws on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and can evaluate body function through the muscle/ meridian relationship. It can also establish connections between imbalances, put them in order of priority and determine the most effective treatment. Kinesiology applies a wide range of gentle yet powerful techniques. These restore balance and create and sustain health, well-being and more effective functioning. Kinesiology also draws on and integrates other therapies and healing modalities and can be used as an adjunct to any therapy. Kinesiology is renowned for being able to uncover and help the underlying causes of health problems that are difficult to find by any other means. How do we define “Awareness” and why is it a central purpose of TFH Kinesiology? How is it that we think we can access the unconscious or subconscious, and improve internal harmony or emotional balance? What is Intention- is it an excuse for ‘Doing the wrong thing and getting the right result’? What is TCM? BALANCE OF LIFE ENERGY CREATES A NATURAL STATE OF HEALTH AND VITALITY, IMBALANCE IN LIFE ENERGY (due to stress, diet, thinking, lack of movement etc. will create discomfort and eventually expression of disease in the physical. Maintaining balance in life- mental, emotional, physical, nutritional, will maintain balanced chi and produce vitality and prevent disease.) If the person is in harmony, the couple is in harmony? Then the family, the village, the nation (how does it go?) What is the Chinese Five Element Theory? Can be integrative, complementary or alternative practice -Not a panacea that resolves all human difficulties all by itself. Does not replace professional medical care and appropriate use of drugs, surgery, vitamins, minerals, psychological counseling, chiropractic, although it does offer an empowering tool for self-care and an option for the 70-90% of common complaints of human beings that do not require medical intervention, but are nonetheless given palliative, or totally unnecessary, and perhaps detrimental drugs and surgery. Integrative- means it is the central focus of a holistic practice that is oriented to prevention, wellness and holistic balance in life, rather than treatment of symptoms or diagnosis and treatment of disease. Complementary means that in conjunction with other modalities such as medicine, massage, chiropractic, psychology, it can enhance the effectiveness of treatment, and empower the individual to become an active and responsible participant in the creation of their own optimum Wellness Alternative means – where there is no treatment, other than perhaps some palliative medication, or there is no recognized cause or condition (it’s all in your head), or where available treatments are not chosen- cure worse than disease scenarios- TFH offers hope of some kind of ability to improve experience of life in the face of limitations, conditions (named or mysterious) and can often produce positive results where nothing else has, and/or where there was nothing to treat. Muscle-Testing, Checking or Monitoring? What type of Muscle Testing are we doing? The TFH approach to the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), is to check if a particular muscle is easy to hold in a contracted position – come to a “lock” within about 2 inches of the range of motion. Normally this is a rather light test, and is not meant to assess the strength of the muscle or identify injury/malfunctions. Most of the time we are working with muscles that are within the normal range of strength/function, yet we can observe startling changes in the muscle response related to specific thoughts, emotions, foods, etc. Sometimes a particular muscle actual feels very “weak” at first, and after working a particular reflex point, it feels stronger. The muscle tests used in Touch for Health ®are adapted from those developed by Kendall & Kendall which are standards in physical therapy disciplines. In TFH, though, only two pounds (1 kg) of pressure and two inches (5 cm) of motion are needed to determine whether a muscle can 'lock'. We are not testing actual strength, but rather the ability to lock the muscle when a small amount of consistent pressure is applied to a muscle that has been functionally isolated. Energy Healing - A general term that has evolved from the Western adoptance of working with the body's subtle energies is energy healing. Energy healing takes many forms and has evolved in many ways. Touch for Health ®was the basis for many of these new discoveries in the world of energy healing. Self Care - In a world in which the ability to keep oneself healthy in body, mind and spirit, it is an advantage to know techniques that can be used to help achieve and maintain this good health. In the United States, the trend is that healthcare is becoming more expensive and is rising at rates up to 15-20% per year and the coverage that people received is being reduced in many cases. 40 million people in the U.S. currently go without health insurance and many people work in pain or when sick to keep their jobs in tough economic times. All of us already practice self care when we exercise, eat healthy diets and do things to improve our outlook of life and to grow as individuals and preserve our health. We must also practice Self Care when deciding if the pain, injury or illness that we or our loved ones is experiencing is serious enough to require a visit to a doctor. We always recommend seeing healthcare professionals in serious situations, but what do you do until you get to the appointment? And what can you do to assist in your recovery? And what if you can do something to resolve the pain or discomfort without needing to miss a day of work, or miss a vacation or the necessity to perform at work, in a sport or attempting to achieve a goal while not at your optimum? Touch for Health ®and eTouch can be a great tool in the Self Care efforts of people. What is TFH? A brainstorm! Bulletin Board Items: Bernadette When using a surrogate, is it necessary that the surrogate be completely balanced first? Or, if there is a time constraint, can I just choose a surrogate that seems in reasonably good shape? Matthew It is of course ideal to have both physical touch (this is our textbook approach) and have the circuit balanced for the purpose of acting as a neutral surrogate immediately prior to the balance. Carrie Thie uses a surrogate in her prayer & healing circles at the Malibu Methodist Church, and it is always a part of the process to balance the surrogate first. However, when the surrogate is balanced for the group, they do not actually maintain physical contact. And it seems to be a positive and beneficial experience for everyone. Often when I am demonstrating the practical use of a surrogate, I do not balance the surrogate first, and it still works. Just like being in balance yourself is most effective when supporting/facilitating others through a balance, we don't necessarily get ourselves balanced before helping someone else. I think the principle is the same for surrogates.
